OTT Traffic Exchange
OTT like WhatsApp, viber, Telegram, WeChat Traffic Exchange

Viber 1+ Bn users, WhatsApp 1.5+ billion users, Line had also reported 560 million registered users worldwide, This doesn’t include the online users that Telegram, Nimbuzz, Tango, WeChat and Skype have as well.

whether telecom operators like it or not, the future in telecommunications is clear and this is only the start. The main reason in my opinion users prefer to use these services as their main go to apps for communicating for family and friends is convenience and costs.

Now, this is very cool for the millions of users that are enjoying the convenience and the free communications with family and friends anywhere in the world, now the question is what about the app developer ? how much money can they lose on resources before they can start making profits ? As you may know know already even if your offering only app-to-app calling for free and you have millions of users you will be not making any money on minutes or even anything else, right ?

In this short article i will share with you a new way for OTT apps developers to immediately start making money while still offering app-to-app calling between users, cool ? continue reading …

I want to focus on Viber for now as they did a very interesting trick 2-3 years ago when they started offering termination alternative at almost 50-60% less rates, this is what telecom operators called it “traffic hi-jacking by OTT apps” and started blocking them in some countries, but thats lame as a $5.00 ikev2 VPN server can immediately solve the blockage issue. Ok so what does that mean ? Viber made millions of dollars for terminating calls from originators to their network (on-net).

How does it works? for example you dial +1(234)123-123 (e.g your mom’s) using some calling card the call goes to your calling card provider servers, the call then gets routed to Viber (if the user is online on Viber App the call will ring/connect) ofcourse you get charged a normal rate e.g 10 cents a minute, while this call never actually hit the PSTN network and it was completley routed on-net, so Viber charges the calling card provider e.g 1 cent for this call compared with 7 cents that the PSTN termination offers.

Limitations ?

Based on my market research the main problem is that Viber cannot connect all the calls because some users simply do not use Viber and are registered on other apps e.g WeChat, WhatsApp etc.. so even if you try terminate traffic through Viber network instead of the regular PSTN you will probably get 1-5% ASR (Answer Success Ratio).

What’s the solution ?

Well nothing too complicated, the same way that GSM operators must interconnect to be able to send each other calls to numbers on their network OTT Apps will need to do the same, many OTT app might want to send each other traffic by passing the PSTN completley but don’t know where to start and how to do it.

TelecomsXChange Open Trading Platform for Voice Carriers continues R&D (Research and Development) since 2008 has all the tools that are needed for Voice Carriers and OTT Apps to exchange voice traffic, settle financial transactions and to allow each OTT network operator to set their own termination pricing as well, e.g you can try to interconnect your network or App users to Viber in minutes using TelecomsXChange.

if you want to start receiving traffic on your own network you must have at least 10,000 active users or more, users must be registered with their real phone numbers which many apps use as a part of registration process. the more users you have the more traffic will complete on your network and will result to more money earned.

Results:

The more app providers connect to the TelecomsXChange OTT hub the more profit OTT app developers will earn and the cheaper it becomes for over 2 Billion smart phone users to connect with their loved ones and definitely in no time we will all be PSTN free.
